The charts below show KPD’s 2020 Calls for Service and Crime Reports. “Calls for service” indicate whenever a call comes in from a citizen or officer to investigate an incident. “Crime reports” indicates when a crime report was written by KPD regarding an incident. Obviously not all calls for service are for crimes, and not all calls for service for crimes lead to a crime being officially recorded by police.

The chart above shows ALL calls for service vs crime reports. KPD received over 280,000 calls in 2020, but only about 44,000 crimes were reported. That means that at most, 16% of calls for service lead to an actual reported crime.

The chart above shows only Calls for Service that reported a crime vs Crime Reports actually filed. Most calls for Violent and Non-Violent Crimes led to reports being filed (about 59%). Less than 10% of property crime calls for service end up with a report filed.

A common talking point in defense of over-policing is that people want a rapid response to crimes in progress like active robberies, rapes, and shootings. However less than 8% of calls reporting violent crimes reported that the crime was in progress.
